Nursing mnemonics are memory shortcuts that help you recall complex clinical information quickly and reliably. Whether you're in a clinical setting or sitting an exam, these tools can be lifesavers. Here are 10 essential nursing mnemonics every student must know.

1. ADPIE — The Nursing Process

Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation. This is the foundation of all nursing practice.

2. SBAR — Communication Framework

Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation. Essential for communicating patient information to physicians and other nurses.

3. OLDCARTS — Pain Assessment

Onset, Location, Duration, Characteristics, Aggravating factors, Relieving factors, Treatment, Severity.

4. ROME — ABG Interpretation

Respiratory Opposite, Metabolic Equal. If pH and CO2 move in opposite directions, it's respiratory. If pH and HCO3 move in the same direction, it's metabolic.

5. FAST — Stroke Signs

Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911.

6. RACE — Fire Safety

Rescue, Alarm, Confine, Extinguish/Evacuate.

7. PASS — Fire Extinguisher Use

Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.

8. PERLA — Pupil Assessment

Pupils, Equal, Round, Reactive to Light, Acommodating.

9. RICE — Injury Management

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

10. ABC — Priority of Care

Airway, Breathing, Circulation. Always assess and address these in order. Airway issues kill fastest.
