Here's what you need to know to pass NCLEX mental health questions and thrive in clinical practice.
The Therapeutic Nurse-Patient Relationship
Everything in mental health nursing starts with therapeutic communication. Unlike social conversation, therapeutic communication is purposeful and patient-centered. Key principles include active listening, open-ended questions, reflection, and avoiding false reassurance.
NCLEX frequently tests which response is therapeutic — and which isn't. Always choose responses that acknowledge the patient's feelings and encourage them to express themselves.
Major Mental Health Disorders to Know
Focus your study on these high-yield conditions:
- Schizophrenia — positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions), negative symptoms (flat affect, social withdrawal)
- Bipolar Disorder — manic vs depressive episodes, lithium therapy and monitoring
- Major Depressive Disorder — safety assessment, antidepressant medications
- Anxiety Disorders — panic attacks, therapeutic approaches, anxiolytics
- Personality Disorders — especially borderline personality disorder
- Substance Use Disorders — withdrawal syndromes, nursing priorities
Psychotropic Medications Are Critical
Mental health pharmacology is heavily tested. Know the major drug classes: antipsychotics (typical and atypical), mood stabilizers, antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, TCAs), anxiolytics, and stimulants. For each, know the mechanism, key side effects, and nursing monitoring priorities.
